Coming Vaguely Soon, Niagara II!
The Register has
revealed that Sun will launch the successor to its
UltraSparc T1 (Niagara) in 2007. The chip will have 8 cores, just like the current one, but it'll have 8 hardware threads per core, a floating point unit per core, and will operate in multi-processor configurations. It will be clocked at at least 1.4GHz, and manufactured with a 65nm process. This doesn't seem to be Rock, incidentally - Rock will launch separately. So Sun do have a plan, seemingly. I hope they succeed - who wants to live in an all-386 world? :)
